From the heights of Atlas, looking out toward New York, residents are able to see the expansive landscape and monuments that once greeted millions of immigrants who chose to leave their roots and come to America when their boats passed the Statue of Liberty on their way to Ellis Island. When residents turn in the other direction, they look out over Jersey City into New Jersey, whose communities have grown from families who originally passed through Ellis Island over a century ago as well as more recent immigrants from across the world. The art collection at Atlas celebrates the importance of the immigrant experience in America while keeping an eye on the majestic urban and natural landscape visible from the building.

DALYA LUTTWAK
Untitled
The first artwork we see when entering the building is this large-scale metal sculpture with a network of intricate root systems in gold and black. The roots spread across the wall with small roots connecting to form larger roots. These roots all come together at the strong gilded center, which symbolizes the strength and vitality that comes from people coming together from all corners of the world. Through this piece, Dalya Luttwak extends an invitation to viewers to delve into the concealed world beneath the earth’s surface, where the secrets of nature’s growth and resilience are unveiled. Luttwak’s sculpture stands as a profound metaphor, capturing the shared experiences of families, including her own, uprooted from their homeland by the tumultuous tides of history. This sculpture goes beyond merely echoing her family’s resilience and determination. It invites viewers to reflect on the deep bonds that unite all forms of life and celebrates the innate drive of life to flourish, even amidst the harshest conditions.

We Met on the Corner of Sunset and Vine and Everything Was Fine
The technique used in this piece is similar to that of mosaic, where smaller individual fragments are cut and fit together into a larger pattern or composition. The bold shapes and forms created from a variety of different works of art set the tone for the tenants as they arrive, welcoming them to a space filled with art. Jason Wright is a New York based artist whose work incorporates a process of finding: marks, forms, and gestures are cultivated for discovery and revelation, and are mined from an ever-growing stockpile of visual culture.
